Ichijoya Tatami Making Lesson (Recycled Igusa (rush grass) wreath-making activity or Mini Tatami making activity )
Established in 1902, Ichijoya is a tatami shop with a history dating back over a century. Passed down through generations, the current fourth generation is operated by four siblings.
The igusa rush used to make tatami mats is produced in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, a city that produces over 90% of Japan's total output. However, in recent years, due to declining demand for Japanese-style rooms and the rise of igusa from China, domestic igusa production has decreased to 1/30th of its peak levels. Tatami, proud part of Japanese culture, is a wonderful flooring material that stays cool in summer, warm in winter, acts as cushioning, and helps regulate humidity. The scent of new tatami has the same kind of relaxing effect as walking in a forest. Ichijoya wants people to rediscover the appeal of tatami and hopes to pass on tatami culture to future generations.
