Kato Shrine

Kato Shrine in Kumamoto Castle enshrines the castle's builder and first lord of the Kumamoto domain, Kato Kiyomasa.
The solemn figure of the castle from the shrine grounds is a truly wonderful scene. The shrine's guest hall opened in Fall 2024 and is a great place to take a break while enjoying breathtaking views of the castle. The shrine grounds also offer views of the castle keep and Uto Turret, a designated National Cultural Property that is currently under repair. The worship hall's 15m by 5m ceiling painting is also a must-see. The shrine is perfect for gatherings where guests can come to pray, then experience Kumamoto's history and culture as they explore the shrine's grounds.
