Mifune Town Center Gallery

The town of Mifune is situated near the geographic center of Kyushu, approximately a 40-minute drive southeast from central Kumamoto City.
In 1979, Japan’s first carnivorous dinosaur fossil was discovered here, propelling the town to fame as a “dinosaur town.” Today, Mifune is recognized as one of Japan’s foremost dinosaur fossil sites and continues to draw international attention.
Mifune Town Center Gallery, located on Hondori Street, sits in an area that once flourished as a town lined with white-walled storehouses, sake breweries, and merchant homes. The gallery itself occupies the former main residence of Yoshihiro Hayashida, a wealthy merchant from the late Edo period (mid-19th century). After touring the Mifune Dinosaur Museum, enjoy a reception at the Mifune Town Center Gallery South Storehouse—a historic building retaining traces of its Edo-period merchant-town charm.
