Suizenji Jojuen Garden
Located in central Kumamoto City, Suizenji Jojuen Garden is an elegant strolling-style landscape garden. Suizenji Jojuen Garden traces its origins to 1632, when Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first Hosokawa Lord of the Higo domain, established a villa here. The garden was later completed by his grandson and third-generation ruler Lord Hosokawa Tsunatoshi. The garden is centered around a pond fed by ground water from Aso, complemented by gently undulating artificial hills, floating stones, and other elements. Visitors can immerse themselves in the ever-changing natural scenery and refined garden aesthetics across all four seasons. Upon entering the main gate of Suizenji Jojuen Garden, you will find the elegant thatched-roof Kokindenju no Ma immediately to your right. Suizenji Jojuen Garden, which harnesses the abundant ground water of Aso and recreates the famed 53 Stations of the Tokaido (a historic highway), invites guests to savor an outdoor reception amid its ever-changing seasonal landscapes.
